The Minotaur by TheRedNightDog The Minotaur by TheRedNightDog

Day 1 - Welcome to the first instalment of Myths and Monsters March!

We’re going to kick if off with one of my favourites - The Minotaur!! I’ve always loved mythology and was pretty heavily into Greek mythology as a kid, the story of Theseus and the Minotaur being my favourite.

My intention with this series is to explore different versions of these monsters as their depictions often change over time or are never truly agreed upon in the first place.

On the left we have the classic depiction of the bull-headed monster that stalked the Labyrinth. This is the Minotaur seen in the myth, with only the head of a bull. He is much more “realistic” compared to the others and reminiscent of the Minotaur’s depiction in things like Time Bandits or Heroes of Might and Magic 2.

Next up is a more fantasy-influenced version, his bull features extending down to hoofed feet and a covering of fur. He carries a weighty axe in hand and is often shown as having more human-like intelligence. This is the Minotaur I grew up with playing hours upon hours of Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

Finally we have a more modern take on the myth, more bull than man and a rather hefty beast! this version is usually less intelligent like the classical beast; more beast than man and consumed by rage. You can find this Minotaur in God of War or Warhammer.

The second type has near-human intelligence whereas the third and GoW type are more your crazy bestial monster...
